YOKO KANNO

Macross Plus soundtrack composer,
Macross Dynamite 7 song composer
July 16, 1999

"L'an mil neuf cens nonante neuf sept mois ..."

In the year 1999 and seven months ... and sixteen days. I realized only in retrospect that Anime Expo '99 began on the eve of the day the
SDF-1 Macross supposedly crashlanded on Earth. And yet no one could have predicted that on the July 17, 1999, the very day foreshadowed as the coming of the Macross ship, that AnimEigo would announce its Macross project. Life moves in mysterious ways ....

To paraphrase myself, "she is one funny, quirky sprite of a personality." I just finished interviewing Yoko Kanno for EX magazine in her hotel suite, and her Anime Expo reception is hours away. (Her husband and frequent collaborator Hajime Mizoguchi hasn't yet flown in.) I find myself in the surprising role of escort to her and her manager. She wants to amuse herself—which means she wants to doodle. I don't have my Copics with me, but oddly enough, I do have my PowerBook and a box of crayons. (Don't ask.) This is her personality in colored wax.

There's not much more that needs to be said for this virtuoso. Except maybe this: Watch Macross Plus. Watch The Vision of Escaflowne. Cowboy Bebop. Wolf's Rain. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Aquarion. And listen.

Walk away enlightened.

(Thank goodness she's nowhere as pretentious as my last paragraph sounds.)
