Background

The actual class (and whether it is Oberth class or not) of the Miranda, Akishima, and later destroyers is unspecified. The first three Oberth class ships are named after aerospace pioneers Hermann Oberth, Robert Goddard, and Konstantin Tsiolkovsky. The similar names in both the Macross and Star Trek franchises are a matter of parallel evolution. (The first appearances of Oberth class ships in both the Macross and Star Trek franchises occured in 1984. Similarly, the first appearances of a ship named Miranda or Miranda class ship in both the Macross and Star Trek franchises occured in 1982.)
