Development

The HWR-00 series is Humankind's largest mobile ground weapon ever put into actual combat use. From the base of the Destroid walking system, the trackless ground weapon was developed as a "land battleship." This unit was intended to confront giant aliens as a land combat weapon and was developed with a large body and many larged-sized firearms. The design is a significant departure basic Destroid concept being heavily-armored and heavily-armed causing a lack of maneuverability to the extent where it hinders operation and as a result, only the gun fighting abilities were pursued. Planning began in 2000 December, trial production began in 2005 October, and the first machine's roll out occurred in 2008 September.

The MkI was rolled out in September 2008 and its specification did not equipped it the arm missile launchers. But it was requested by the military to increase its firepower and it was changed to the MkII specification. However, operability at the development stage was questioned and 2 production models were produced by 2009 and remained aboard SDF-1 Macross in outer space. The first unit installed on SDF-1 had constant military results from combat with the Zentradi. From the rollout schedule, the MkIP is regarded as the first airframe in the HWR-00 series. It was thought to be a working experimental model for data collection given that only 1 was produced. Released MkI combat units specifications changed to MkII. Further improvement of firepower and range by equipping arm missile launchers in planning by SDF-1 Macross to use them as portable gun batteries which was not mainstream thinking. Production of the variable bomber (VB) inherited the concept of the HWR-00 series in the 2030s with the VB-6. It could change into 3 forms: shuttle, heavy GERWALK, and Destroid, and was active on the front lines as of 2059.

The prototype Monster HWR-00-MkIP trial production-type Destroid Monster is super-heavy class Destroid which is the predecessor to the HWR-00-MkII Monster. The design was put into practical use by humans, maximizing non-rail ground artillery at the time, emphasizing long-range artillery capability common with the later MkII. However, being equipped with an arm (manipulator) as a feature differs greatly from the MkII.

The super-heavy class Destroid was designed as an autonomously walking heavy artillery for surface-to-surface attack and point defense. It has the capability of autonomous walking, but because its weight is too great, its maneuverability is less than desirable and even walking on irregular surface was not recommended. In fact, it is better to consider it as a semi-fixed battery instead of calling it a Destroid. Because it was developed with only long-range attack as the main point, it is completely unequipped with close-in defense weapons (Due to its huge size and number of heat emissions, it was concluded that even smoke/chaff dispensers would have no effect, and they were not equipped).

The armor was designed to be rigid and extremely thick to withstand a reaction weapon explosion at close range, but that brought about even greater increase in weight and degradation of maneuverability. On the other hand, because its firepower is tremendous, it possesses destructive power comparable to strategic bombing.

The Destroid Monster was mass-produced and assigned for use in the defense of military positions, primarily the Grand Cannons. However, most were destroyed before firing their main cannons even once by the Zentradi's satellite orbit beam attacks. Only two, including the first mass-produced unit whose main cannons' mountings were not complete, were stationed aboard the SDF-1 Macross at the time of its space launch ceremony, but since the Macross's on board factory had enough parts for three or more machines, at least three machines overall were stationed and used in actual combat.

Description

Erlikon 50 cm linear cannons were planned as the main armament in the beginning, but use was tabled due to problems with the system's strength as well as insufficient output from the reactor during continuous firing.

The Mk I is equipped with "arms" for ammunition delivery, firing position adjustment, and other duties. The original Mk I was not conceived to be equipped with a missile launcher on either side of the main body, but its firepower was increased during development, and it was thus renamed Mk II. Both variants have a rear dozer unit. Four aiming-sight cameras; two on the sides to the fore and two on the sides to the rear. One periscope mounted on cockpit hatch. Four standard types of cannon shells are used, including howitzer. anti-armor, anti-aircraft, and nuclear reaction warheads. While it is a movable structure, the body, not the cannon body, can change elevation. Together with a built-in internal section hydraulic arm, the structure can modify the angle-of-fire.

The MkIP was an experimental Destroid as the body possessed weapons using self-propelled heavy artillery and a design with many immature parts, which became a highlight of the series. The legs had low mobility on irregular surfaces so it did not walk often; a fault which was not corrected in the successor unit either. The MkII was enlarged to fulfill the performance demand and came to have a body size incomparable with the weapons at the same time. At 300t, walking is possible, but mobility is nil. The dozer blade is installed in the rear as a mechanism to support the body when firing was inherited in later units.

The HWR-00 series, developed jointly by Viggers and Centinental, rolled out the MkIP in February 2007. Only 1 was manufactured and was supplied to the containment plan of the extraterrestrial remains on Mayan Island. For this reason, the strategy with risk of an information leak to only a few isolated islands was considered the purpose which carry out the final test in actual combat. Moreover, when "Operation Iconoclasm" was put in motion, annihilation of the "Bird Human" with reactive warheads was attempted.

The most characteristic part of the MkIP's body structure is the large-sized folding manipulator. It was assumed that it was used for ammunition delivery, firing position adjustment, and other duties. However, since additional firepower and long-range precision-guided munitions were required with the MkII, it was converted to missile launchers. Otherwise, the structure is similar to the MkII.

From the beginning, it did not have sufficient mobility for close-quarter combat and to counter-balance, cooperation with an escort force was essential. Some aging units became live-fire tests in the performance evaluation tests of the "Super Nova Plan". The Monster, produced during the turn-of-the-era, was left behind in technological advances.
