HARUHIKO MIKIMOTO & SHOJI KAWAMORI
The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Flash Back 2012 Character designer & director/mechanical designer
August 24, 1988
Flash Back 2012 was the Hikaru, Misa, and Minmay's all but literal ride into the sunset. The creators wanted to give their beloved characters a final sendoff, and not have them linger into irrelevance. It was Minmay's turn to look mature as Mikimoto experimented with making her look thirty years old, even though she would only be eighteen in the final version. Arihiro Hase, Mika Doi, and Mari Iijima would reprise their respective roles in non-anime works in the future, but Hase tragically passed away in 1996.
After Flash Back 2012, Mikimoto and Kawamori try to work together again, but something always seems to intervene. The two lifelong buddies create a pilot for Maimu, Kawamori's slice-of-life story about a girl bicycling through the mountains of Tokyo, but the project fell through. Eventually, Sunrise assigns Mikimoto and Kawamori to Mobile Suit Gundam 0080 and 0083 respectively—officially bringing them full circle to their original high school passion, Gundam, but on two separate paths.
They will not work together again for over five years.
