The VF-19 Excalibur is the next generation main variable fighter used by the U.N. Spacy in the 2040s.The decision to adopt the VF-19 Excalibur as the next generation main variable fighter was made in 2041. It was deployed in the newly-established Emerald Force onboard the flagship of the Macross 7 fleet in 2045. While the fighter form of the YF-19 boasted astounding maneuverability performance, the decrease in maneuverability control proved fatal. The VF-19 aimed to improve the balance by reworking the fuselage structure, but the VF-19 Custom daringly maintains high maneuverability by following the YF-19 concept.
The VF-19 Custom is remodeled unit adopted for preliminary testing preceding the adoption of the VF-19. Emphasis on maneuverability and stability in contrast to the prototype YF-19, modifying the fuselage of the prototype unit balances the high performance inherited from the original unit. Furthermore, the point of this aircraft, characterized more than the outstanding performance, is "singing", the principal objective of its design. This unit was entrusted to Basara Nekki of the rock group "Fire Bomber" through Ray Lovelock. It was setup for verifying the application of the VF-19 and aimed researching song energy for the top-secret military program "Project M". It appeared on the battlefield as a civilian aircraft basking in the media limelight while received thorough maintenance and data collection behind-the-scenes by the military.
F and S-types replaced engines used in the YF-19 prototype with an engine which has stable output in addition to simplifying the airframe body. Because of these changes, it was completed with the comprehensive performance that allow average pilots to control it, exceeding the prototype unit. While the F-type has superior engine thrust compared to the S-type, it has inferior cruising speed and rate-of-climb from sea-level. Although the performance is lower than the S-type, the difference from the VF-11, which is the main fighter, is obvious; it has the performance suitable to being referred to as the next generation VF.

The FF-2550X engines, which features improved atmospheric flight speed, replaces FF-2550J engines.
- VF-19 Custom: Customized version equipped with canard forward wing, internal speaker system, speaker and launcher pod.
VG wing with forward-swept standard cruising configuration; Forward-swept delta-wing combination main wing (VF-19F, VF-19S); canard forward wing (replaced by high-maneuverability verniers in VF-19F and VF-19S; vertical T-O and landing (VTOL); supersonic cruise and maneuvering in region of Mach 5+ below the stratosphere; sufficient thrust for attaining orbital velocity over a Earth-class planet; wrap-around imaging monitor screens in all variable modes; two-dimensional thrust vectoring with two independently pivoting exhaust nozzles; vernier slit; anti-projectile (bulletproof) shield for Battroid mode use; active stealth system; fighter-carried pin-point barrier system allows for armor simplification and light weight; medium-range high maneuverability missiles stored in internal weapons bays on the side of leg/engine nacelles; option of external fold booster and conformal propellant tanks. In the prototype YF-19, conformal type FAST packs were developed simultaneously but progress of active stealth technology has relaxed the restrictions, reinforcing the basic performance.
