Macross Plus is the third animated Macross video project, and the second to have Shoji Kawamori and Studio Nue's involvement. As such, it is the first sequel series to the original series, The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, with the original story creators. It was scripted first as a film, and then rewritten as a four-part video project, which was released from August 1994 to June 1995. After the final volume was released, the movie was created using much of the same footage, but also with significant cuts and additions. The Movie Edition was released in September 1995 as a double bill with Macross 7: The Galaxy Is Calling Me! An English version was released in the United States and England by Manga Entertainment between 1995 and 1996. The story takes place in 2040, thirty years after the end of Space War I.
