A state-of-the-art all-regions aircraft operated by Δ (Delta) Flight Valkyrie unit together with the "Tactical Musical Unit 'Walküre'" for Var Syndrome suppression. Unlike the VF-31A Kairos, Δ (Delta) Flight's VF-31s are designed specifically for support of 'Walküre'. Δ (Delta) Flight VF-31s adopt forward-swept wings for improved maneuverability in atmosphere, drone plates and rare Fold Quartz. Δ (Delta) Flight's VF-31s perform air shows using drone plates during live performances by 'Walküre' in addition to rescuing civilians involved in Var Syndrome riots.

The VF-31 Kairos was formally adopted as the main fighter of Chaos. Unlike Δ (Delta) Flight's VF-31, it is used for pure combat and does not have equipment necessary to support 'Walküre'. The wing shape has also been changed to a delta wing.

"Kairos"

  • VF-31A: Mass production variant. Operated by Chaos's α (Alpha), β (Beta) and γ (Gamma) squadrons.
    • VF-31AX Kairos Plus - Variant used by Δ (Delta) Flight using "Siegfried" spare parts. Size of Gunpod and mini gunpod increased to improve offensive capabilities. Delta wing design. Added large-size fold quartz to improve performance with 'Walküre'.
  • VF-31B: Mass production variant.

Δ (Delta) Flight - "Siegfried"

  • VF-31C: Tactical Support variant.
  • VF-31E: Early warning and electronic warfare variant.
  • VF-31F: Air Superiority variant.
  • VF-31J: Air Support variant. Dual camera eye.
  • VF-31S: Commander variant. Enhanced communication control system.

Design Features

Shinsei/LAI ISC-TO21C ISC (Inertia Store Converter). Multipurpose container. Radome is rotated when nose tip rotates during Battroid transformation. Arms can be deployed in Fighter mode. Optional Fold booster. Since the era of the VF-1 where it was assumed that a Battroid could infiltrate, move freely on an enemy warship, control or destroy central command, VF-19 and later VF have increased in firepower, it has been expected to use an optional Fold booster to bypass enemy fleets and defense lines and deliver the aircraft directly to the command center. Fold Wave system equipped on Chaos's Δ (Delta) Squadron to amplify fold waves of 'Walküre' songs for extended range using rare Fold Quartz inserts (VF-31C, E, F, J and S). However, high-purity fold quartz installed in the YF-30 is a rare material which is difficult to procure, so it is substituted with smaller quartz or artificial quartz fold carbon. For this reason, the basic performance has dropped significantly from the YF-30, but it still maintains a level equal to or higher than the VF-25 Messiah manufactured by the Macross Frontier fleet (VF-31A). Delta wings (VF-31A and B). Forward-swept wing for improved maneuverability (VF-31C, E, F, J and S) at low speeds in atmosphere during Var suppression. Drone launchers (VF-31C, E, F, J and S). Enlarged canard wings to compensate for aerodynamic center toward the aft of aircraft (VF-31A). Δ (Delta) Squadron VF-31s' AERIAL III flight support AI and fold-wave system have been adjusted for each respective member in accordance to support Walkure. VF-31AX switches from forward-swept wing to delta wing which enhances acceleration and mobility along with weight reduction. Large fold quartz added to VF-31AX to improve performance when resonating with the singing-voices of 'Walküre'-tactical music unit.

Flying Controls

Vortex Flow Controller (VFC) is primarily for high-altitude maneuverability at low-speeds when small amounts of gases flow to the aircraft surface reducing the aircraft resistance (drag) by delaying the occurrence of strake vortexes.

VF-31 Kairos

  • Two Shinsei Industry/ P&W/ RR FF-3001A Stage IIC thermonuclear reaction turbine engine (in space, maximum thrust of 1,645 KN). In atmosphere, air is used as a propellant for increased flight time.

  • Two Shinsei Industry/ P&W/ RR FF-3001/FC2 Stage IIC thermonuclear reaction turbine engine (in space, maximum thrust of 1,875 KN)
    • Thrust reverser, Equipped with 3D-maneuvering nozzles. Over-boost possible. In atmosphere, air is used as a propellant for increased flight time.
    • During Fold wave system operation, engine operation is boosted by about 15%. (VF-31C, E, F, J and S)

Accommodation

One pilot with Shinsei/LAI EX-Gear EGP-03/05. The rear is equipped with an auxiliary seat. Pilot maintains posture as the cockpit remains horizontal and is accommodated under chest block unlike conventional VF with sophisticated transformation mechanisms.

Sensor windows on the dorsal surface of the nose. Retractable radome (VF-31E). Sentinel SWGA-F20B Energy Conversion Armor system. Bifors ECS-09A Active Stealth system. LAI CCFD-11 Chaff/Flare/Smoke Discharger System.

VF-31 Kairos

  • Mauler ROV-127E 12.7mm Anti-air beam machine gun (One barrel on VF-31A), located on head turret.
  • Howard LU-18A Beam gunpod. While previous VF were equipped with projectile gunpods, the VF-31 is equipped with a standard high-output beam gunpod because engine output has increased. In GERWALK mode, it moves to the dorsal side and acts as a turret.
  • Two Remington LM-27s 27mm mini gunpod rail gun mounted on the ventral side of the fuselage in Fighter mode as fixed armaments, exposing the muzzle during use. Mounted on the arms in Battroid and GERWALK mode. Gunpods are stored facing backwards but rotate forward from the support point base.
  • Two Ka-Bar OTEC AK/VF-M11 Assault knife for close combat in Battroid or GERWALK mode, folds and is stored behind elbow shields in Battroid and GERWALK modes. Knife edge constructed out of super alloy and can be reinforced with pin-point barrier.
  • Bifors CIMM-3B Micro-missile launchers with 36 micro-missiles.
  • Two engine surface launchers.
  • One Multipurpose container located at the rear in Fighter and GERWALK modes and unfolds behind the head turret in Battroid mode.
  • Anti-projectile shield located on each forearm in Battroid mode made from Energy Conversion Armor. Shields are part of the wing surface in Fighter mode.

VF-31 Siegfried

    • Can be mounted with remote energy charging unit for Multi-drones or sound projection unit using Fold Waves. (VF-31C, E, F, J and S)
    • Fold Projection unit. Special additional equipment with a built-in speaker and projection unit using fold waves. Used to enhance the effect of Walkyre's singing voice outdoors or in outer space. Equipment that needs to be replaced with a normal container, but can be used with a super pack.
  • Anti-projectile shield located on each forearm in Battroid mode made from Energy Conversion Armor. Shields are part of the wing surface in Fighter mode.
  • OTEC VPB-S24 Pin-Point Barrier system.
  • Sixteen MDP-001W Cygnus Multi-drone plates equipped with entertainment components, mobile stages, illuminated stages, holographic dancers while functioning for defense and amplifying Fold waves of 'Walküre' songs stored engine surface launchers or in the calf section in Battroid mode. Maximum speed of 200 kmph. For atmospheric-use only. (VF-31C, E, F, J and S)
  • Compatible with Lil Draken unmanned support drones which acts as boosters.

During the live event, Kawamori confirmed the VF-31 is a update to the YF-30 Chronos that appeared in the Macross 30: Ginga o Tsunagu Utagoe game for PlayStation 3.

The name Siegfried 001 is also the callsign of Leon Sakaki from the Macross 30: Ginga o Tsunagu Utagoe game.

"Walküre" is the German form of "Valkyrie".

"Kairos" (καιρός) is the second word in Greek for "time", meaning "opportune moment". The other Greek word for time is "chronos" (χρόνος).
